Daniel Dalke - a would-be whisper of conscience
A Simple Poem for a Special Person
MARTHA ZIMMERMAN
Together today we gather a life to celebrate,
Not our loss to mourn, but rather, acknowledge someone great;
For this sweet wonderful person, so recent to depart,
Has gave us plenty of reason, to endear in our heart.
Be it Martha, Momma, Grandma, she's blessed each of our lives,
With her happy, cheerful karma, good memory survives.
Her heart-felt laughter and sweet smiles did easily appear,
And could dismiss all our trials, just because she was near.
From a very big family, 'tis where she got her start,
A younger child of so many, some were early to depart.
Her own mother did pass away, while she was yet in school,
And she longed for the coming day to escape Father's rule.
A fairly young and pretty bride, it was soon that she wed,
'Twere some with doubts they didn't hide, it wouldn't work they said.
But through a war, two children born, and sixty years gone by,
A strong determination worn, the critics turned awry.
Two daughters that she raised so well, each wrapped up in her love,
So many good times they can tell, there's lots there's stories of;
A friend, confidant or partner, she was there when in need,
A warm and comforting mother, for them she was indeed.
A hair-dresser she soon became, the provider to be;
Her profession treated the same, with great integrity.
Hard work, long hours, great attitude, trying to be the best,
Rewarded for how she pursued, 'twas better than the rest.
Along with aggressive effort, and attitude of gold,
There's the additional support of laughter loud and bold;
If laughter's the best medicine, then she's surely OK,
For plenty of times there have been, her laughter's made the day.
So cheerful and always laughing, so seldom to be mad,
The many games to be playing, great times that have been had.
Always such an encourager, quick to give her support,
Then an earnest follower, eager for a report.
She always did seem so tireless, and ready to pitch in,
And it seemed the hardest task, she would promptly begin.
And always the selfless one, she put others ahead,
And when sacrifices were done, not a complaint was said.
But finally time has run out, her energy is spent,
Whatever 'twas that came about, all that effort has went;
And our “Energizer Bunny,” she finally has dozed,
And life is a bit less sunny, “The beauty shop is closed.”
But the story does not end here, a new chapter's begun,
And it is one that's filled with cheer, a still happier one;
For she's simply gone before us, so that she can prepare,
In that Greater Place with Jesus, for when we join them there.
Love,
Daniel
